CONFLICT RESOLUTION:
Most conflict theorists state that conflict is neither negative nor positive. There is nothing good or bad about conflict. It’s the charge we put on it. Conflict is the ultimate change agent. It’s the ultimate growth. The pearl needs conflict to form-the grain of sand that got into the oyster; the Grand Canyon was formed due to the conflict of the wind and the water eating away at rock.
Budo is the Japanese word for “The Way of the Martial Arts”. It literally means to stop and control the attack. The more elegant martial arts see fighting as a last resort, and they strive to avoid fighting if possible. Aikido’s goal is to create a win-win situation. Organizational Development too is based on cooperation and empowering the individuals in the organization. Both Aikido and OD wish to create an atmosphere where blending exists, which can lead to positive results. Leaders also face conflict as part of their on-going job. The skilled leader needs to embrace conflict and direct it, versus it directing them. Richard Kim, a noted Karate master stated, “When your fist goes forth, first withdraw your temper. When your temper goes forth, first withdraw your fist.” The martial artist just like the skilled leader can’t allow conflict to control them. Conflict is inevitable, but fighting is a choice.
